Step 2 step 3. Steel measuring tape is much more accurate than cloth measuring tape. When measuring to fit any of these blinds or shades to your windows it is important to remember a few key things. For all other blinds and shades use the longest measurement.

1 measure the width inside the window opening at the top middle and bottom. Measure the width inside the window frame at the top middle and bottom to allow for variances in construction. Then if possible add at least 3 inches to each side to ensure you re covering the light gap and to maximize privacy. For solar shades and vertical blinds record the width at the top of the window only.

Always measure to the nearest 1 8 inch. Use the smallest measurement as the window width to make sure that the blinds clear the sides of the window frame. For the width of any set of blinds carefully measure the width of the window and add between 2 and 4 inches on each side. Decide if you want an inside mount or an outside mount before you begin the measuring process.

2 measure the height inside the window opening from the top of the window opening to the window sill three times. Take the narrowest of the three width measurements and round down to the nearest 1 8.
